Writing/ Photography

For more than twenty years, outdoor enthusiast, Chris Hockley, has been sharing his on-the-water experiences with the public through writing and photography.  Chris' first published work came at the age of thirteen when the editor of a local newspaper gave him the opportunity to write his own bi-weekly column after meeting with Chris and finding himself impressed with the knowledge this young man had already collected through experience.

"I was fortunate to be born into a family that both hunted and fished.  These activities were certainly family oriented and some of my fondest memories include catching my first fish and helping my Uncle Terry field dress a deer - myself on one hind leg and my younger sister on the other.  I wasn't even eight years old," relays Hockley.  Of course, growing up on a farm owned by the renowned Kortright family didn't hurt.  "I spent virtually every waking hour fishing on the farm pond for bass, in the stream for trout or walking the labyrinth of paths cut through the property with Hugh Kortright as he shared with me knowledge he had been taught by his father Francis Kortright (founder of the Canadian National Sportsman's Shows)," Hockley shares excitedly.  Much of Chris' writing has been based on this solid foundation in the outdoors.

Following the successful completion of the North American School for Outdoor Writing, Chris discovered a dream and broke into glossy format.  "This opened a floodgate of opportunity for me and I seized everything I could and ran with it," states Hockley proudly.  These opportunities continue to grow exponentially today and Chris has built an impressive resume while doing what he loves best.  Despite his love for fishing and the great outdoors, Chris' true passion is sharing the experiences he's had or the things he's learned along the way with readers through heartfelt stories, conversation pieces, interviews, how-to articles and much more...

This is where it all began.  The name of my column that started with my first piece on finesse fishing.  A technique that I was using with much success at the time.  After twenty years, I continue to write my Guidelines column for the Scugog Standard and write a regular column for Just Fishing under the same name.
