Huck Finn

Saturday April 26, 2008 – Dust off your rod, grease your reel and re-string the fishing net, as the sixth annual Huck Finn Youth Fishing Derby will be taking place on Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, Ontario.  This free derby has continued to grow from its humble beginnings to the point where it is at now.   Event organizers are fully expecting to draw more than 2000 children this year.  More than 700 speckled trout will be released into the pond prior to the event.  Many of these stocked fish will be tagged for donated prizes should they be caught by a child during the derby.  The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with a parade starting at Elgin Park and will travel along Mill Street to Water Street.  Youngsters are encouraged to dress up in Huck Finn costumes and decorate their bicycles and wagons in the spirit of the event.  Some very imaginative costumes and floats are the norm.  Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed, and best decorated.  Everyone who takes part in the parade will also be invited to fish in a preferred VIP angler’s area on the pond.  The fishing gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. “In addition to the fishing, there will be free bait, fish cleaning, free lunch and prizes for every registered participant under the age of 15,” says event chairman Pat Higgins. Fishing tips and a half-day fishing trip will be presented by Chris Hockley; there are washrooms in the park and plenty of adult supervision including OPP officers.  Although registration does take place on the day of the tournament participants are encouraged to register before the day’s events. You can pick up a ribbon at Uxbridge Canadian Tire.
