He's Baaaaack!

After a not-so-brief-reprieve from my column I have to admit that it’s great to be back.  I have been doing plenty of writing but after fifteen years of hacking away on a computer, it was time to get back to what I love best.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy writing for magazines and newsletters but both of these pale in comparison to writing for an enthusiastic editor like Rik Davie.  The Scugog Standard has offered a golden opportunity for me to share my fishing expertise and write about anything I like.

The last few years have not been wasted.  I have enjoyed a busy guiding schedule with my business Blitzcreek Pro Fishing (www.blitzcreek.com) as well as a barrage of tournaments across Ontario and the U.S.A.  I have written a number of articles and have become a regular contributor to the Ultimate Ontario Fishing Annual including articles in this year’s issue.  Seminars and kids days have been plenty and there are plans in the works for a large kid’s event to be hosted by Port Perry.

This year I was also fortunate enough to be selected to compete in the world’s first fishing-based reality show; The Last Cull.  The Last Cull is being televised in Canada and the U.S.A. on a number of different networks.  Though this was the first attempt at such a show and as such, there are a few things that could have been improved upon, the show has been quite successful.  Meeting and spending personal time with Roland Martin and Survivor’s Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca was reward in itself.  Each of these people has found success in what they love to do.

I too am determined to make this column a success.  With your support and input we can do just that.  Look forward to features and columns concerning conservation, local tournaments, news bits, fishing tips, strategies to help you find fish, new product reviews, interviews, lake reports, opinions and kids events, fishing picture of the week, contests and prizes.  I would like to thank Pennzoil/Quaker State Canada, Boatland Canada, Spike-It U.S.A., Enviro Packaging of North America, Zerust and Lowrance Electronics for making this column and all the upcoming contests and giveaways possible.

Not able to make it to this year’s Toronto Boat Show? Stop by the Spring Fishing Show and the Toronto Sportsmen Show.  I will be at both of these shows again this year.  Until then drop me a line at chris@blitzcreek.com.  Send me some of your fishing pictures and odd fishing stories.

What is a fishing article without a fishing tip?  Start the year with optimism.  Quit resorting to the ol’faithful baits that you have been using for years.  Ice fishing is a great place to begin.  Purchase a new lure, try tipping your spoon with plastics or change the brand of line you use.  No excuses.  You are allowed two lines; keep ol’faithful on the “other” line.  You may just surprise yourself with the catch of a lifetime.

Bass Wishes,

Chris Hockley
